Past Events

Immigration Initiative: Our Immigration Initiative was a tabling event we held in the lobby of Talley Student Union on November 29, 2018. Our goal with this was to show people how difficult immigration/life for immigrants can be. We explained the harm in using the term ‘illegal’ to refer to undocumented immigrants, we distributed a fact sheet surrounding immigrant misconceptions, and a citizenship test for individuals to take.

Museum Tour: We took the AMIKids students, our mentoring group,  on a fieldtrip to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on November 16, 2018. While we explored the whole museum, the students especially enjoyed the Anthropod Zoo, the Mountain Cove, and Terror of the South Overlook!

Sexual Assault Awareness Table: We held a table in Talley Student Union on September 25, 2018 in support of sexual assault victims. We had an “I stand with survivors because…” sign, had a pledge to sign that said you will make an effort to know more, stand with survivors, and speak up about sexual assault, and we had resources for sexual assault victims.

CHASS Fall Fest: This event was hosted in collaboration with CHASS, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, on September 24, 2018. We used statistics cards about social justice issues, but played “two truths and a lie” and three statistics of each selected category were placed on a table. If people guessed the right “lie,” they were given a donut munchkin. Students were allowed to guess from multiple categories and have up to three donut munchkins. The goal was to show students that some statistics are so hard to believe because we are not always directly affected by them, but they are still real and have an impact.

Packapalooza: We had a table at Packapalooza on August 25, 2018, where we displayed statistic note cards on our table. The statistics were about sexual assault, the school-to-prison pipeline, mass incarceration, poverty, hunger, and a lot of more pressing issues. We had people go through the statistics, pick out the ones that stuck out to them most, and flip over the “solution card” for that statistic to see what they can do to help with the issue.

Cookout for a Cause: Cookout for a Cause was an event on August 23, 2018 that was hosted at Tucker Owen Beach, where we grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and had students fill out petitions and email their local representatives.

Campus Connections:  Campus Connections kicked off the Fall 2018 semester on August 21, 2018 in Talley Student Union. It was a tabling event set up to talk to students about who we are, what we do, and what we represent.
